Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT: 10 Research Fellowships in Data Science and Social Impact

The new call for applications is now open for the Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT, organized by Fondazione CRT and ISI Foundation (Institute for Scientific Interchange). The program offers 10 applied research fellowships in data science and social impact.

Fellowships: Internship and Research Projects

The selected fellows will have the opportunity to undertake a 12-month interdisciplinary internship at ISI Foundation, working alongside top-tier data scientists and leading international organizations such as UNICEF, WFP, and others.

This program is a valuable opportunity both for recent graduates aiming for an academic career and for those interested in careers in the corporate or nonprofit sectors.

The research will focus on key topics, including:

  • Network science and big data to study urban mobility and the future of cities
  • Data science for public health and epidemiology
  • Computational models to predict epidemics and pandemics
  • Applications of artificial intelligence for sustainable development, migration analysis, and humanitarian response
  • Data science and machine learning to analyze socioeconomic inequalities
  • Exploring the societal impact of artificial intelligence and large language models (evaluation, ethical implications, governance, and regulation)

Research methods will include machine learning, statistical modeling, natural language processing (NLP), and network science, applied to large and complex datasets.

Eligibility and Applications

Applications are open until February 3, 2025. Each fellowship, valued at €23,000, is available to both Italian and international graduates holding a master’s degree in STEM disciplines (such as computer science, physics, mathematics, or statistics) or in social sciences with experience in data science.

The Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT

Since its inception in 2003, the Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT has supported over 800 young researchers with a total investment exceeding €40 million, marking it as the largest scientific initiative led by Fondazione CRT.

“The Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT bridges research, innovation, and social impact,” said Anna Maria Poggi, President of Fondazione CRT. “The Lagrange fellowships offer young talents the chance to explore the transformative and ‘for good’ potential of data science and artificial intelligence, addressing critical challenges of our time. Through collaboration with international experts and interaction with the innovation ecosystem that Fondazione CRT and ISI Foundation have fostered over the years, these researchers not only gain advanced skills but also shape ideas and solutions that contribute to collective well-being and the future of our communities.”

Alessandro Vespignani, President of ISI Foundation, added: “The Lagrange Fellowships, supported by the Lagrange Project – Fondazione CRT, are an opportunity not only from an academic perspective, enabling fellows to acquire concrete skills and vision in data science and artificial intelligence, but also as a professional and life experience. Over the years, the many young talents who have collaborated with ISI Foundation researchers and its numerous international partners have directly engaged with the great cultural, economic, and social challenges of today. They have contributed to addressing these challenges by interpreting data and its impact on society. This is a significant responsibility, aiming to protect human lives, uphold rights, and improve our communities.”
